Text:

Today, November 1, 2023 at approximately 2:26pm, FPD responded with Franklin Fire - Rescue and Macon County EMS to United Community Bank for a medical call. Two bank employees began having ill symptoms after handling the same cash deposit which is believed to have had an unknown substance on the currency. The employees were treated at the scene, and are fine. The bank was evacuated, and an investigation was started to find the source of the unknown substance that caused the temporary sickness. The investigation led to a secondary location at a residence in Franklin. Law Enforcement Officers reported a strong chemical odor as they approached the home to investigate.

Both locations were thoroughly checked by FFR, and a North Carolina Department of Public Safety Regional Response Team (HazMat Team). The findings were inconclusive. FPD and FFR was assisted by the Macon County - NC Sheriff's Office and the FBI.

We have no reason to believe there are any other safety concerns at this bank, or other banking institutions in the area.
