OUTLOOK

The Bermuda high off to our southeast will support hot conditions and largely suppress afternoon thunderstorms through Friday. A cold front will slide through the region by the weekend, providing at least a brief relief from the heat.

Macon County Cooperative Extension, Christy Bredenkamp will be hosting a Ginseng Workshop in September

The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service is offering a free seminar on Ginseng Production for homeowners who desire to grow “sang.” This program will be held on Thursday September 3 rd from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. online via Zoom.

Topics covered will be: state regulations for growing and hunting “sang”, plant physiology, present and historical use of ginseng and comparing Asian versus American ginseng. Major time and emphasis of the program will be dedicated to the woods simulated cultural practices such as: site selection and preparation, sowing, harvesting, drying the roots and seed stratification.

Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with highs ranging from the upper 70s in the higher elevations to the mid-to-upper 80s in the lower elevations. Calm winds in the morning increasing to come out of the northwest around 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight

Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly clear, with lows in the 60s. Calm winds.

Thursday

A 20 percent chance of showers after 2pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with highs ranging from the upper 70s to near 80 in the higher elevations to the upper 80s in the lower elevations. Calm winds in the morning increasing to come out of the west 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers before 1am. Partly cloudy, with lows in the 60s. Winds out of the west around 5 mph becoming calm before midnight.

Friday

A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with highs ranging from the upper 70s in the higher 70s to the upper 80s in the lower elevations. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Omar, located a few hundred miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and on Tropical Storm Nana, located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

1. Showers and thunderstorms associated with an area of low pressure located about midway between the Windward Islands and west Africa have changed little in organization since yesterday evening. Some development of this system is possible this week as it meanders over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic Ocean.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...20 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...30 percent.

2. A tropical wave is expected to emerge off the coast of Africa later today and merge with a disturbance centered a couple of hundred miles southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands in the next day or so. Gradual development of this system is then possible, and a tropical depression could form by this weekend while it moves westward over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic Ocean.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...60 percent.
