OUTLOOK

A strong cold front will cross the area from the northwest later today, bringing a round of showers and thunderstorms. Unseasonably cold high pressure will build in behind the front tonight and settle over the region for the rest of the week. Expect an upper level ridge to build over the region from Sunday into next week, continuing dry, but warmer weather.

Weather Alert We are under a Flash Food Watch today. The National Weather Service has forecast heavy rain for today that could lead to minor flooding.

A late season strong cold front is forecast to push through the area Wednesday and may support strong to severe thunderstorms, with damaging wind gusts being the main threat. Heavy rain may cause localized flooding.

...HEAVY RAINFALL RETURNING TO THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS WEDNESDAY MORNING...

.Strong lift and deep moisture preceding a cold front likely will combine to produce periods of heavy rainfall over the southern Appalachians. Particularly in areas below southwest-facing ridges, an elevated risk of flash flooding will exist. The threat is greatest during the morning and early afternoon, but will not diminish until the cold front passes Wednesday evening.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM EDT WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina, including the following counties,

in northeast Georgia, Habersham and Rabun.

In western North Carolina, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Macon, Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Swain, and Transylvania.

In upstate South Carolina, Greenville Mountains, Oconee Mountains, and Pickens Mountains.

* Strong lift and deep moisture preceding a cold front likely will combine to produce periods of heavy rainfall over the southern Appalachians and adjacent foothills near the southern Blue Ridge Escarpment. A total of 2 to 3 inches of rain can be expected in the most favored areas, south and southwest facing ridges.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Air quality is in the upper range of green for most of the county, with the ridges and other higher elevations today also being in the upper range of green.

Pollen

Pollen levels are expected to be in the low-medium range (3.2 out of 12) today with Juniper, Oak, and Maple being the main culprits. Tomorrow is expected to be higher, in the medium-high range (8.8 out of 12).
