Summary

The US Senate met after the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, and elected Patrick Leahy to replace the outgoing Chuck Grassley as the President pro tempore. Vice President Kamala Harris, the President of the US Senate, administered the Oath of Office to three new US Senators: Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff (winners of the recent runoff election in Georgia), and Alex Padilla (selected by California Governor Gavin Newsome to replace Kamala Harris). This flipped the US Senate from the control of the Republican Party to the Democratic Party, with Vide President Kamala Harris breaking any tie votes in the chamber.
