OUTLOOK

This is an abbreviated news and weather briefing.

A weaker upper low pressure will track near the Great Lakes Sunday and Monday bringing some more snow to the North Carolina mountains upon the cool west to northwesterly flow. High pressure builds into the region on Tuesday leading to drier conditions. Low pressure is forecast to approach our region from Texas later in the week.

• Macon Public Health reports five more COVID-19 Deaths since December 30th [LINK]

• A drive though COVID-19 testing clinic has been scheduled for the Nantahala Community on January 19th at the Nantahala EMS Base located at 1096 Junaluska Road. The clinic will be held from 10AM until 2PM or until tests run out. Persons may get a COVID-19 test regardless of their ability to pay and do not need to schedule an appointment. This is for TESTING ONLY. This is NOT a COVID-19 vaccine administration location.

• A Vaccine Clinic will be held in Highlands on Jan 20th [LINK]

• Macon County is registering people for COVID-19 Vaccination. [LINK]

• Beginning Thursday, January 21, 2021 Macon County Public Health in partnership with Macon County EMS will be conducting COVID-19 testing and vaccinations Monday-Friday, 8:30am- 4:00pm at the Macon County Department of Public Health [LINK]

...ACCUMULATING SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS THROUGH MONDAY MORNING...

.A cold upper-level low pressure system, and associated moisture, will cross the region from the west this morning. This system will produce periods of snow showers across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains, especially near the Tennessee border. Accumulating snow will create slick roadways and potentially hazardous driving conditions.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST TODAY ABOVE 3500 FEET...

* WHAT...Snow. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated 4 to 5 inch amounts above 5000 feet. windss gusting as high as 35 to 45 mph at times.

* WHERE...Mainly elevations above 3500 feet in Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Graham, Macon, and northern Jackson Counties in western North Carolina.

* WHEN...Until noon EST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions with temperatures in the 20s in most areas. The hazardous conditions will likely impact the morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Some locations in the mountain valleys could also have patchy dense freezing fog that will contribute to dangerous driving conditions through the early morning hours.
