The Macon County Board of Education and the Macon County Board of Commissioners held a joint meeting today with members of the NC DPI (Department of Public Instruction) for the purpose of a grant award ceremony. The NC DPI awarded $62 million for the construction of a new high school in Franklin. The total cost is not yet set in stone, but could be about $120 million more or less, depending on what is included in the final plan.
NC Senator Kevin Corbin was present, as was NC Representative Kal Gillespie. Also in the room were Jack Horton and Pat Taylor, the Mayors of Franklin and Highlands, respectively.
“We know the impact a school facility has on students’ ability to learn. Many schools that were built decades ago lack the safety infrastructure, code compliance, programmatic requirements, and other modern features that are needed for education today. This is the case with the existing Franklin High School. I’m proud to award a Needs-Based Grant to Macon County Schools for the design and construction of a new Franklin High School and Bartram Academy. This new comprehensive high school campus will create a state-of-the-art educational facility to serve the students of Macon County for generations to come.”
