Here is the news and weather briefing for Macon County.

GENERAL OUTLOOK

Temperatures will be well above normal through the day today before a storm system brings a cold front through the area tonight. Heavy rainfall and a few isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible today and tonight. Dry and cooler high pressure will return Monday before another system approaches the area from the northwest by the middle of the week.


WEATHER HAZARDS

A Flood Watch is in effect tonight and tonight. A round or two of thunderstorms is possible later tonight or early in the morning.

Showers, mainly after 11am. Patchy fog between 8am and 2pm. Highs in the lower 60s. Calm winds in the morning increasing to come out of the southeast 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia, including the following areas, Habersham and Rabun, western North Carolina, including the following areas, Graham, Henderson, Macon, Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Swain and Transylvania, and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, Greenville Mountains, Oconee Mountains and Pickens Mountains.

* WHEN...From 7 AM EST Saturday through late Saturday night.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch for flash flooding means there is a potential for rapid onset flooding based on current forecasts. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation and may impact areas that do not typically flood. Please monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take action quickly should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

98 – Trajan succeeds his adoptive father Nerva as Roman emperor; under his rule the Roman Empire will reach its maximum extent.

945 – The co-emperors Stephen and Constantine are overthrown and forced to become monks by Constantine VII, who becomes sole emperor of the Byzantine Empire.

1186 – Henry VI, the son and heir of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I, marries Constance of Sicily.

1302 – Dante Alighieri is condemned in absentia and exiled from Florence.
