Hazards

A developing frontal system will bring abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to the southern Appalachians and the adjacent foothills today through Saturday. This will result in widespread rain, especially along south-facing mountain ridges, and a few thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours. Isolated flooding could develop across the mountains and foothills as early as Thursday, with the risk increasing Thursday night into Friday.

Another passing storm system over the weekend could bring another round of heavy rainfall Saturday through Saturday night. The threat for isolated flash flooding may be higher with this later system, particularly with heavy rain falling on saturated soils from the earlier rainfall. A few landslides will also be possible along steep mountain slopes over the weekend.

Flood Watch
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
351 AM EST Thu Jan 25 2024

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia, including the following areas, Habersham and Rabun, western North Carolina, including the following areas, Macon, Southern Jackson and Transylvania, and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, Oconee Mountains and Pickens Mountains.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected over the watch area throughout the day. By this evening, storm total rainfall of 2.5 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts are expected. This rain is expected to fall relatively evenly throughout the day, so stream rises are expected to be gradual. However, isolated flash flooding cannot be ruled out.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. Please monitor the latest forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
